In 2012, a group of Cape Town designers found themselves making beautiful things with nowhere to sell them. International platforms weren't interested. Local retail was slow to take independent labels seriously.
So we built the platform we wished existed. A place where the work spoke first — no gatekeeping, no minimum order quantities, no pressure to dilute what makes SA fashion worth wearing.
More than a decade later, we still believe the same thing: the best independent fashion in the world is being made in South Africa. Indiemode exists to make sure people can find it.
No exclusivity clauses. No mandatory discounting. Designers set their own prices, manage their own production runs, and decide what gets listed. We take a flat commission and stay out of the way.
Every product listing includes the city and studio where it was made. We verify this. Origin isn't a marketing claim on Indiemode — it's a data point.
When a designer says 22 pieces, we mean 22 pieces. We don't allow restocks masquerading as new drops. The scarcity on Indiemode is real — that's what makes it worth paying attention to.
We don't accept brands with weekly drops or offshore manufacturing. Indiemode is for designers who make things carefully — not quickly. The pace reflects the work.
We run open studio visits, collaborative pop-ups, and a shared photo studio in Cape Town available to all listed designers. When the whole scene does better, every designer on the platform benefits.
We prefer designers who source locally — not because it's fashionable, but because shorter supply chains make better products. We ask about sourcing at onboarding and publish the answers.
Every designer on the platform is manually verified as based in South Africa and producing locally. We re-verify annually.
We charge a flat 12% commission on sales. No listing fees, no monthly subscriptions, no hidden charges. Designers keep the rest.
Our shared Cape Town studio is free for listed designers. Consistent, editorial-quality imagery lifts every brand on the platform.
Payments go directly to designers within 48 hours of delivery confirmation. No holding periods, no minimum thresholds.
